For 5 days a week for 1 hour - I want you to practice interpreting consecutive dialogs from your favorite TV show, a movie, interview, radio host, YouTube channel, etc.
No rewinding videos to listen again - must be raw, right there on the spot real-time interpreting rehearsing.
Pretend there is an audience of Deaf people watching you so you feel formal.
Put in your best effort to look, feel and act as professional as possible.
Videotape yourself interpreting via in ASL and voicing from different interesting topics. Vary the topics so that you get a well rounded practice with unfamiliar vocabulary that you need to gain.
Write down all of your questions for whatever signs, phrases, concepts that you struggle with. You should gather over 50 new things that you're still unaware, or unsure of and we'll go over them together.
Reminder: Stay calm, stay collected, keep your mind blank - keep your inner voice quiet - absolutely no inner criticism, complaints, impatient reactions are allowed when you rehearse.
You need to conserve your energy to completely focus on becoming FLUENT in pacing, affect, emoting, processing, selecting advanced ASL concepts or signs and phrases, and all the other important ASL linguistic skills.
In order to become fluent as an ASL signer or if you're aiming to become a professional ASL interpreter - many hours of diligent hands-on practice is crucial. I cannot emphasize this enough.
I understand, now due to Covid-19 - socializing is challenging with other Deaf people or other advanced accurate ASL signers. Thankfully, nowadays, more online social meetings, conferences, workshops are being held. Take advantage of those opportunities whenever possible. However, keep in mind that many signers signs incorrectly or uses wrong ASL conceptual phrases or PSE mode - and most people are not trained to effectively teach ASL nor want to or know how to teach. Socializing with others is to be a balance of practicing receptive skills, processing and expressive skills with real signers. That's it.
Come to me with all the questions you have in order to clarify anything you're confused about.
Stay patient.
Stay focused.
Stay optimistic.
You'll get there!
